One of my biggest wins from this year is finding out a morning rhythm that works for both my son and me. It often involves a morning out-of-the-house excursion; then a snack; and then on the way home, he falls asleep in the car and takes a long afternoon nap…usually I get a rest in too.
Almost as soon as I cracked the code of our routine, I wanted to perfect it. I was determined to figure out the ideal time to leave the house so that everything went smoothly. Except as soon as I held onto the plan too tightly, it crashed and burned. My son didn’t want to go straight into the car. He wanted to look at the flowers alongside the driveway. And water the outdoor plants. And practice his jumps.
The harder I clutched onto my schedule, the more frustrated I got; and the worse our mornings went.
The only thing that finally helped? Letting things take the time that they take. Yes it would be great to go to the park, but it doesn’t really matter if we leave at 10:15 or 10:45. We’ll get there when we get there. It will take the time that it takes.
Unsurprisingly, in my creative practice, impatience is one of my growing edges. No matter what I try, or do, or want, nothing seems to be happening fast enough, or exactly according to plan. It’s hard to let things take the time that they take!
It helps me to look back on the past few months and reflect on what has happened and grown and changed.
So, as we round out Quarter 2 of 2025, here are some of my reflections and wins:
Completed my latest short film, YOUNG HOT DIVORCEE. Wahoo! The film is now finished and we are submitting it to festivals for 2025-2026. Film festivals cost $20-50 per submission. If you’d like to support the cost of submission, consider becoming a paid Substack subscriber.
Completed a full draft of a feature film. This one was a doozy, but I did it. I finished a messy first draft of CONFLICT OF INTEREST, a film about an oncologist who falls in love with her patient, and now am in the revising process…
Redid my website. This wasn’t quite the plan, but once I started it was hard to stop. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!
Started a new acting class that is helping me level up as a performer.
Booked two plays and one commercial. And had one callback, one directors session, and 15 auditions! Phew!
Looking ahead to the next few months, here are some of the goals that I hope to achieve (and a peek at some of the alternative posters for Young Hot Divorcée!).
